A summer session

Today, I opened up the school library for four hours so that our children could come in to return and borrow books, and show their families and friends our lovely room full of books!

Last year I did the same and a few families came in. This year was massively more popular! From 12pm onwards, the library was full of buzz and happy chatter, as older children read books to their younger siblings (quite a few babies enjoyed story time), ex-pupils returned to say hello and families played with our games.

It was lovely for me to catch up with the children and their families and hear how the summer holidays were going. I think some of the children also liked it as they could spend some time chatting with their friends, who they might not otherwise see during August.

This is definitely a worthwhile thing to do. Not only do children get to replace their reading materials, they can also feel part of a community again at a time where, sometimes, they might feel at a bit of a loss. I just can’t quite believe, though, we’re all back here in a few weeks’ time!
