Happy Birthday to Holly!

We’ve been a little quiet online recently because a very special event. On Sunday, it was Holly’s tenth birthday!

Happy Birthday,Β  Holly!

It was a big year this year - 10!!!
It was a big year this year – 10!!!

It was quite a big year for us, being the first year of double-digit birthdays. To celebrate, Holly finally got her ears pierced (you can’t see them in this photo as her hair’s over them!). She had been asking us for years as most of her friends had had them done but we agreed on 10 because of all the work involved in keeping them clean and safe. At least she had them done a year earlier than her mum (she’s terribly competitive!).

It’s strange to think of Holly as 10. I never really became emotional when she started nursery or school but this year has really hit me as her mum. This is her ten years ago, give or take a month! (Sorry it’s a Word document – my laptops have died at the rate of nearly one a year and in the process have lost many of my digital files.)

She’s no longer in the little years, and I guess I am realising how quickly she’s growing up. In 10 more years, where will she be?!

In the meantime, a very happy birthday to my not-so-little girl.

Holly's birthday cake this year was a homemade, edible (obviously!) version of her beloved Bear Bear, whom she's had for 9.5 years. He goes everywhere with her and we're not allowed to eat this version of him!

Childtastic Books started out as a collaborative blog, written by me and my young daughter Holly. Now she's nearly a teen, she's off doing exciting and new things but I am still here, reading, writing and reviewing books for children and young adults of all ages. I miss her input but I hope she will pop in from time to time to do some guest posts! A little about me - I have just finished an MA in Children's Literature from the University of Roehampton (result pending, eeek) and am a part-time primary school librarian. The other part of my time is spent writing and editing, my own work and others, and I am waiting for my first non-fiction book to be published - a teacher resources pack for Handa's Surprise. I welcome comments and love to hear from visitors to this blog. Please note though that, because of time constraints, it is rare that I can read and review books from self-published authors. I receive so many requests and feel badly about not being able to keep up with them all. Thanks for visiting! Sam

  1. I love the way that worm on the left casts down with each fresh click of your pages. Very cute!

I just have to comment because Holly is beaming so beautifully. What a capture of joy, childhood light, and one who knows she’s loved.

I remember turning 10 and feeling VERY special, and then when my son turned 10, OH, I made it special πŸ™‚

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HOLLY!

    1. Thank you for such lovely comments on both our site and on our post about Holly’s birthday. Ten does seem like quite a big deal for me (Sam) because Holly now is out of single digits. It’s quite scary how quickly time is passing by. Welcome to our site!
